Why is a cosmetic surgery consultation important?
Here at SurgiCare, we pride ourselves on our ability to offer a free, no obligations cosmetic surgery consultation with a specialist surgeon before you decide if a procedure is right for you.
Once you’ve made your initial enquiry, your Patient Co-ordinator will decide which surgeon is best suited to perform your desired procedure. A cosmetic surgery consultation will then be set up to get the ball rolling.
What happens during a cosmetic surgery consultation?
You can bring along a relative, partner or friend to keep you company during your cosmetic surgery consultation. You should expect a thorough look and appraisal of your health history, in addition to your reasons for and expectations of surgery.
In consideration of others and to ensure that your consultation is as informative and relaxed as possible, we would ask that you do not bring children with you to the clinic, as we cannot be held responsible for their behaviour or their safety.
The surgeon will want to ask about your general health and past medical history, such as previous illnesses or operations, allergies, medication you are taking and whether or not you smoke.
All SurgiCare surgeons are on the GMC Specialist Register. All are Specialists in their chosen field of cosmetic surgery. You can check their registration on the General Medical Council website at www.gmc-uk.org or phone 0845 357 3456, giving the surgeon’s forename and surname. Their registration number will be clearly shown on their surgeon Profile, which should be freely available to you.
Make sure that you make the most of your cosmetic surgery consultation with the surgeon, by bringing a list of questions that you would like to discuss with them.
During your cosmetic surgery consultation the surgeon will help you to feel comfortable and well informed about every aspect of your surgery, including any associated risks. Your surgeon will take images of you pre-surgery for his records and he will discuss what you can expect to achieve from Surgery. The consultation is your opportunity to confirm to the Surgeon your expectations of the surgery. If your expectations are unrealistic, then your Surgeon will tell you so.
As much research as you can do prior to your cosmetic surgery consultation is always beneficial, even if it is reading about the procedure itself, prior to seeing the Surgeon. You may wish to prepare a simple list of questions, to help you as you may be a little nervous on the day, along with a notebook to record specific details of your conversation with the Surgeon.
Questions you should be able to ask to yourself and answer are:
- Did I like my Surgeon, do I feel comfortable with him operating on me?
- Did the Surgeon answer all my questions, to my satisfaction?
- Did the surgeon listen to my concerns and answer these directly?
- Do I fully understand what the surgery can and cannot do including any risks?
- Do I know the full costs of procedure?
It is imperative that you feel reassured and confident when you leave your consultation for cosmetic surgery. You should not feel pressurised or forced into making a quick decision.
Your Co-ordinator will meet with you post consultation to ensure that you have answers to all your questions and feel informed about your Surgery and aftercare.
If you wish to book your surgery at this stage, then you are able to do so. Alternatively, you can leave the clinic and book your procedure at a later date.
We also recommend that you discuss your plans with your GP but we do as a matter of course, write to the GP’s of all patients who have booked surgery, for their records.
