Arm and Thigh Lift FAQ’s

Who are arm and thigh lifts for?
If you want to remove loose or sagging skin on your thighs or upper arms, these procedures could be helpful for you.
What does it involve?
SurgiCare carry out arm and thigh lifts in hospital under a general anaesthetic by our highly experienced medical team. These procedures usually take 2-3 hours.
Arm Lift
  1. Incisions will be made along the inner arm, which may extend from the armpit to the elbow.
  2. The skin is separated from the underlying fat and muscle and excess skin is carefully removed.
Thigh Lift
  1. The incision is made along the inner thigh area, which may extend from the inner knee to the groin.
  2. In some cases, where additional lift is needed, the incision may carry on along either the femoral line or buttock fold.
  3. The excess skin is then carefully removed.
Patients undergoing a thigh lift or arm lift can go home after one night.
What should I know about arm and thigh lifts?
Before you decide to go ahead with an arm lift or thigh lift, we will offer you a thorough one-to-one medical consultation with a surgeon who specialises in this type of surgical procedure. Your surgeon will explain the options available to you in order to achieve the best results from your arm lift or thigh lift surgery.
Let us know about any medical conditions and allergies you may have and whether you are a smoker. Tell us about any medications, herbal supplements or natural supplements you are taking (both prescription and non-prescription). We will need to ascertain that you are not prone to scarring problems such as keloids (scars which enlarge to form firm, smooth, hard growths).
What are my options?
Your surgeon will explain the options available for achieving the best result according to your individual case and your personal preferences.
For example, if the amount of loose skin is minimal and the excess fat deposits are located below your navel, a short horizontal incision may be all that is necessary.
In some cases your surgeon may recommend liposuction as well as a tummy tuck to remove abdominal fat.
Are there any risks?
As with all surgery, there is always a possibility of complications, including infection, a reaction to the anaesthesia, haematoma, seroma, nerve damage and the occurrence of asymmetries or irregularities. When you have your consultation you will have ample opportunity to ask your surgeon about any risks.
What happens after arm or thigh lift surgery?
The areas operated on will initially feel tight and swollen. The swelling is mild to moderate, and peaks at two to three days. Usually, the sutures are covered with adhesive strips and surgical gauze.
Bleeding
Small amounts of oozing and bleeding are very common but should be no more than a slow staining of the gauze dressing.
Mobility after thigh lifts
Because of the location of the incisions for a thigh lift, it is impossible to avoid lying on them. Change position at least every 30 minutes and move very carefully while putting as little stress on the incision lines as possible.
Stitches
You will probably have several layers of stitches; some will be re-absorbed by the body and some may need to be removed by your surgeon. You will be able to shower on the third day after surgery.
Pain
You can expect some moderate pain after this procedure. Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication for the first few days, after which acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen may be all that you require.
Bruising and Swelling
There may be bruising and swelling which usually subsides after two to three weeks. You will be given a garment to wear for up to six weeks. This will help to alleviate the swelling.
When can I resume my normal activities?
Recovery time varies from person to person. Your surgeon will advise you to take two to three weeks off work.
Can I expect aftercare?
At SurgiCare, we take a special pride in our excellent levels of post-operative support and aftercare. To monitor your progress, we will invite you back at prescribed intervals for follow-up examinations with your surgeon or our nursing staff.
