Ear Correction Surgery (Otoplasty)

Restory symmetry to your face

About

Ear correction surgery (otoplasty) is a simple procedure that will create a more natural look and restore your facial balance/symmetry. Protruding ears can be a major source of embarrassment. But opting to undergo ear correction surgery with SurgiCare could make you less self-conscious and more comfortable, thereby improving your quality of your life.

Before you decide to go ahead with ear correction surgery, SurgiCare will offer you a thorough one-to-one free medical consultation with a surgeon who specialises in otoplasty.

Ear correction surgery is generally a very quick procedure; however, SurgiCare will be able to advise you of a more accurate timeframe during your consultation. It’s also crucial that you have a good idea of how you’d like your ears to look after ear correction surgery while at the same time realising that there are limits to the procedure.

In evaluating your suitability for Otoplasty, your surgeon will assess the degree of prominence of your ears in relation to your other facial features. Other ear defects may be considered.

Procedure

Ear protrusion is simply a defect in which the ear cartilage fails to fold back towards the head properly. Ear correction surgery (Otoplasty) can correct this defect in a number of ways. The specific technique used in your case will depend on individual factors your surgeon will explain during your consultation.

  1. In typical cases, a small incision is made behind the ear to access the cartilage.
  2. Permanent sutures may be used to manipulate the cartilage into the desired shape. In some instances sections of cartilage may be removed.
  3. The incision is hidden in the natural crease where the ear joins the head.

SurgiCare’s goal is to make your experience as easy and comfortable as possible. Ear correction surgery (Otoplasty) can be performed using local anaesthetic with sedation (you may be able to return home the same day).

The Recovery Period

During the week following your ear correction surgery, it's perfectly normal to experience varying degrees of bruising and swelling. Bruising typically disappears within seven to ten days. Minor residual swelling may continue for several weeks, but this should not be noticeable to others.

You’ll need to wear a turban-like dressing between seven to ten days following surgery. A headband might be needed at night for a further four to six weeks. Your surgeon will advise you at your consultation.

You should be able to return to work and resume most of your normal activities within a week. However, it is advisable to refrain from strenuous exercise and sports for six to eight weeks.

After your ear correction surgery is completed, we will invite you back to our clinics to monitor your progress with follow-up examinations. Your surgeon or one of our nurses will see you at prescribed intervals to ensure that your ear correction surgery is progressing as planned.

Considerations

Fortunately, significant complications from ear correction surgery are infrequent. Every year, many people undergo successful ear surgery, experience no major problems and are delighted with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and the risks. Your surgeon will discuss these with you during your consultation.
