Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Balance your facial features

Nose reshaping surgery — also known as rhinoplasty — is the UK’s second most popular cosmetic procedure, after breast enlargement surgery. Through nose reshaping surgery, you’ll be able to change features that you may not like about your nose, such as flared nostrils or irregular bumps. By helping patients reduce and reshape their nose we are helping to build a patient's confidence and self esteem.

Nose reshaping is for anyone who feels that their nose is out of proportion to their other facial features. Typical problems include:

  • Your nose appears too large for your face
  • There is a bump on the nasal bridge
  • Your nose seems too wide
  • The nasal tip droops
  • The tip is thickened and enlarged
  • Your nostrils are excessively flared
  • Your nose is off centre or crooked
  • Previous injury has made your nose asymmetrical

Before you decide to go ahead, SMG will offer you a thorough one-to-one free medical consultation with a surgeon who specialises in nose reshaping procedures. During the consultation, you will be asked to point out exactly what you would like to see improved. This will help your surgeon to understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be achieved.

It is important that you have a clear idea of how you would like your nose to look and, at the same time, realise there are limitations to the procedure.

Nose Reshaping Procedure

Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping is carried out under a general anaesthetic and will require an overnight stay in hospital.

SMG’s goal is to make your nose reshaping surgery experience as easy and comfortable as possible

  1. In a typical Rhinoplasty procedure, all the incisions are made inside your nose where they will not be visible.
  2. If the base of the nose is narrowed or the nostrils reduced, incisions are hidden in the natural crease where the nostril joins the cheek.
  3. Through these small incisions, work is performed on the cartilage and bone that form the framework of your nose. Sometimes, the position of certain bones may need to be altered slightly in order to make your nose look narrower and straighter.
  4. Your nose can also be built up in some areas and your skin will redrape itself over this new “structure”.
  5. The result should look natural and enhance the balance between your nose and other facial features.

Rhinoplasty requires a general anaesthetic to keep you asleep throughout the procedure. Adjustments to the tip of the nose may be performed using local anaesthetic and sedation. You should be prepared to spend one night in hospital.

Your surgeon can re-contour the nasal profile, change the angle between the nose and upper lip and reshape the nasal tip. Alterations can be made to decrease the nasal bridge and reduce the size of the nose.

The Recovery Period

Generally, bruising around the eyes and cheeks is most apparent during the first few days following surgery. Most discolouration will disappear within a week. A few days after surgery, you can begin to wear make-up. Minor residual swelling may continue for several months, but generally this should not be apparent to others.

Depending on the extent of your Rhinoplasty and your general physical condition, you should be able to return to work within a week to ten days after surgery. Straining, bending and lifting should be avoided during the early post-operative period. Most normal activities, including some exercise, can usually be resumed within three weeks.

The aim of Rhinoplasty is a nose that looks natural, blends harmoniously with your other facial features and enhances your self-image. Since the healing process is gradual, you should expect to wait for up to one year to see the final results. You are likely, however, to begin enjoying your new look fairly soon after surgery. In most cases, the results of Rhinoplasty are permanent, except for possible changes associated with the normal ageing process.

Once your nose reshaping surgery is complete, we’ll monitor your progress through a series of regular examinations with your surgeon or a member of our nursing staff.

Considerations

Fortunately, significant complications from Rhinoplasty are infrequent. Every year, many people have their noses reshaped, experience no major problems and are delighted with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and the risks. Your surgeon will discuss these with you during your consultation.

For specific information based on your individual needs, we will be happy to arrange a FREE, no obligation consultation.
