Ward Off A Winter Waist
Now
A US study has confirmed what our jeans have always known; we nearly always gain weight in winter. ‘ People become more sluggish and less likely to exercise when the evenings get dark,’ says Caroline Deakin. ‘We also reach for more comforting food, which is generally higher in calories,’ Jonathan Cashon, a personal trainer for David Loyld (davidloylldleaisure.co.uk) says changes in brain chemicals in winter increases carb cravings. ‘Winter makes us hungrier because a drop in body temperature stimulates appetite.’ He explains. ‘Book one class a week at your local gym, such as spinning or step; studies show that exercise reduces your appetite, so it’ll have a double effect on your body. Caroline Deakin also suggests filling up on brown carbohydrates which are low in calories, high in fibre and provide sustained energy. ‘Porridge and wholemeal toast are good choices. Try a thick winter soup containing seasonal vegetables, such as butternut squash or pumpkin,’ she says for recipes , visit iminseason.co.uk
