Introduction

Independent healthcare providers in England must be registered with the Healthcare Commission. To register, they need to demonstrate compliance with the Care Standards Act 2000 and associated regulations. The Healthcare Commission tests providers’ compliance by assessing each registered establishment against a set of National Minimum Standards, which were published by the Government for that purpose and set out the expected standards for different types of independent health services.

Background and main findings

Surgicare Company is a cosmetic surgery company, which provides surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Other procedures such as varicose vein and hernia surgery are also undertaken. Surgicare Hospital is an eight bedded hospital situated in South Manchester on the ground floor of a modern office building which has been converted to provide a pleasant acute service environment. Consultants carry out elective surgical procedures under practicing privileges.

In patient facilities include a ward area containing four beds with privacy for patients achieved by the use of screening. There are also four single rooms with private shower and lavatory facilities.
Consultations with practitioners are conducted in rooms designed for the purpose.

Surgicare Hospital has been inspected by the Healthcare Commission against the National Minimum Standards (2002), which underpin the legislation of The Private and Voluntary Healthcare Regulations (England) 2001. Overall, the majority of the National Minimum Standards were met and the service is meeting the needs of the patients. The premises were well maintained, clean and adequately staffed. All staff were professional and courteous during the inspection. A recent patient satisfaction survey showed a high level of satisfaction with the level of service.
