Medical Director and founder of the Company in 1991. He is Professor of Surgery at the University of Manchester. Following basic surgical training in Leeds, he was Lecturer in Surgery to Sir Geoffrey Slaney in Birmingham until 1983.
He then moved to London as Senior Lecturer/Reader and Consultant Surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital. In 1989, he was appointed to the Chair in Surgery in Manchester based at South Manchester University Hospitals (SMUH). He set up the minimally invasive laboratory and major services for vascular disease and varicose veins.
Professor McCollum is regularly invited to give Plenary lectures at both national and international meetings on vascular surgery, arterial and venous disease. He is the senior author on over 200 research publications, chapters in textbooks and various articles and reviews.
His clinical interests as a consultant vascular surgeon are across the range of vascular surgery including varicose veins and venous insufficiency. Although his research interests are across cardiovascular disease, Professor McCollum’s venous research team have achieved an international reputation for research on venous insufficiency and ulceration. He has advised the Department of Health on NHS criteria for selecting patients for varicose vein surgery.
