Breast Reduction

I have very large breasts, in comparison to the rest of my body. I have lost a lot of weight recently but my breasts have stayed the same size – is a breast reduction an option for me?

If you feel that your breasts are out of proportion with the rest of your body, or you find it difficult to find clothes that fit properly or feel uncomfortable when taking part in active sport, a breast reduction operation can help. Large breasts can cause back pain, postural problems and distress for some women.

What is involved in breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction is an operation to reduce breast size and weight. Your breasts can also be made firmer with smaller areolas (the darker skin around your nipples).

During a breast reduction operation your surgeon makes incisions around your breasts to remove excess fat and skin. Your remaining breast tissue is then re-shaped and stitched to make your breasts smaller. Your nipples will also be re-positioned.

Would the breast reduction operation be carried out under general anaesthetic?

Breast reduction surgery is carried out under a general anaesthetic and you will usually stay in hospital for two nights. You should also plan time off work after breast reduction surgery so that you can relax and recover at home. You will need to wear a special bra in the weeks following surgery to support your breasts while they settle into their new shape.

Will I have visible scars?

There is always some scarring after a breast reduction operation and it is unlikely that you will be able to breast feed after a breast reduction. However, your consultant surgeon will discuss this with you prior to your operation. In addition, you are likely to lose sensation in your nipples and this numbness may also cover part of your breasts as well.

What are the risks involved in breast reduction surgery?

All operations carry risks as well as benefits. The chance of complications following breast reduction surgery depends on the type of operation and factors such as general health. Your consultant surgeon will explain how the risks apply to you.

After having children, my breasts have lost their fullness and shape. I am very self-conscious as they look older than the rest of my body – what options are available to me?

Most women find that their breasts begin to sag and droop as they get older. Weight loss, pregnancy and breastfeeding can also be contributory factors. A breast uplift (also known as a mastopexy) is an operation to raise and re-shape your breasts.
