New ways to stop drinking yourself fat

Did you know that more than 20 per cent of your daily calories could be coming from what you drink? Caroline Deakin, dietitian and weight loss expert at SurgiCare (www.SurgiCare.co.uk) has the following five easy calories saving tips to keep you trim over the holidays.
1. DITCH THE FIZZY DRINKS a recent study showed that just one fizzy drink a day could mean putting on around a stone a year. So quench your thirst with a sparkling flavoured water or sugar free squash instead.
2. DITCH HIGH- CAL COCKTAILS FOR LOWER CAL CHOICES Swap a pina colada (340 calories) for a Long island iced instead (125 calories) saving 115 calories
3. ASK FOR A TALL GLASS Research has shown that, bizarrely, bar tenders pour more alcohol into short, wide glasses than into tall, slim ones.
4. WATCH OUT FOR LAGER Local beers overseas tend to be stronger and so higher in calories. Stick to half pints or make yours a shandy by adding diet lemonade.
5. WATCH THE MEASURES Spirit measures abroad are larger than in the UK, which means lots more calories. So ask for a half measure, or count one drink as two.
