Surgicare gastric bypass surgery

A quick and effective weight loss solution

A gastric bypass is the most common form of bariatric surgery and a highly effective weight loss surgery procedure.

Through a gastric bypass, food will bypass the stomach and some of the intestine, meaning that less food is required to satisfy your appetite and fewer calories are absorbed.

It is similar to gastric band surgery in that it creates a small pouch in the stomach, which is attached to part of the small intestine.

This dual weight reducing effect means that — when combined with a supervised diet, increased exercise and behaviour modification — gastric bypass surgery could be the most-effective method of long-term weight loss.

Why choose a gastric bypass?
Gastric bypass surgery could offer many benefits over conventional diets and some other weight loss surgery procedures. With a gastric bypass, you will:

  • Feel fuller quickly and for longer
  • Experience a two-way weight reducing effect, restricting food volume and reducing calories absorbed
  • Have a shorter hospital stay than with ‘open’ weight loss surgery procedures
  • Enjoy a quick recovery
  • Lose more weight than with non-surgical programmes — and keep it off
  • Benefit from the support of a specialist team of healthcare professionals
  • Learn the principles of long-term success
  • Benefit from knowing that gastric bypass is permanent, giving you peace of mind that this life change will last

Facts About Gastric Bypass Surgery

There are many misconceptions about gastric bypass surgery. Some people think it is only for very heavy patients, some people feel it is more risky than gastric banding whilst others feel it is too drastic to consider.

See below for some facts about gastric bypass surgery, and if you have any doubts or questions regarding this procedure you can ask them during your consultation.

  • Gastric bypass surgery is preferable to some people as it does not require any adjustment.
  • Gastric bypass surgery usually offers a more dramatic initial weight loss than with some other procedures
  • You do not have to be ‘super’ obese to qualify for a gastric bypass
  • You can get pregnant after having a gastric bypass
  • We monitor you closely and take regular blood tests to ensure that you are nutritionally complete
  • Once you have recovered from the operation and have adjusted your eating habits you will be able to enjoy a ‘normal’ diet
  • You will still be able to enjoy eating out
  • You can still consume alcohol

Frequently Asked Questions

Before undergoing weight loss surgery, it’s important to understand whether or not a weight loss surgical procedure is the right way to deal with your excess weight.

Weight loss surgery should be a solution that you seek after trying conventional weight loss techniques, like dieting and exercise. If these options fail and you need to take radical action, weight loss surgery from SMG can provide long-term help to address the problem.

Remember, weight loss surgery is not a quick-fix solution. At SMG, we offer a comprehensive aftercare programme following weight loss surgery to ensure that you change your eating habits and lifestyle choices to ensure long-term success.

Am I eligible for weight loss surgery?
Weight loss surgery isn’t for everyone and to be eligible, you must meet certain criteria set by NICE.

  • Your BMI should be over 40, or between 35 and 40 with 2 co-morbidities (obesity related disease, for example, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis)
  • You should be over 18 (we generally don’t operate on patients above the age of 60)
  • You have tried other weight loss treatments without permanent success
  • You are medically and psychologically fit for surgery (we will assess this)
  • You have sufficient understanding of the procedure and the lifestyle changes it requires
  • You are strongly motivated to undergo the procedure and lifestyle changes needed

To find out whether you’re eligible for weight loss surgery, call SMG on 080 8256 3465 or get us to call you back.
